Eating seasonal means having fruit and vegetables that are naturally harvested in that specific season. For different regions the fruits and vegetables in season might be different, therefore choosing for foods that are grown and harvested local. Eating seasonal and local would mean that you are not only getting higher quality of food but also helping and sustain your local producers and creating local jobs.

Benefits of eating seasonal and local:

Better taste:

Fruit and vegetables always taste better and fresher when they are local and in season. They have been naturally ripened. Off season fruit and vegetables are refrigerated, chilled, transported, artificially ripened and therefore they lose their flavour and freshness.

Better Nutrition:

Foods which are preserved and transported lose their nutrients and composition as opposed to them being fresh.

Eating food in season will offer an array of fruit and vegetables ensuring that we are getting a variety of nutrients, antioxidants, and phytonutrients. It prevents you to consume the same food whole year round.

Eating food in season is natures way of ensuring that our body is being looked after. For example, in summers we have berries, melons and grapes. All are high in water and keep us hydrated. They are also high in beta carotene and carotenoids giving us energy and protecting us from the sun. Salads have a cooler affect whilst winter vegetables leaks, beans, brussel sprouts, parsnips offer comfort and perfect for soups and stews.

Lower Cost:

Eating local and seasonal will reduce the logistical cost of transportation, preservation, and storage therefore overall coming to a lower cost. It is also cheaper because you are buying something which is available in abundance.
If money is spent locally it will stimulate economic growth further making the produce cheaper.

Environmental Benefits:

Rarely discussed but food also has an impact on the environment. All stages of food production such as growing, harvesting, transporting and consumption contribute to the carbon footprint through greenhouse gas emissions.

The type of transportation plays a significant role such as fruit and vegetables being air freighted and other means of transportation. On the other hand, when fruits and vegetables are harvested off season, the climate-controlled greenhouses use significant amount of energy having a higher carbon footprint.

Let’s Be Realistic

In UK the climate is not necessarily conducive to grow a variety of produce. Having fruits and vegetables in season and local will reduce choices and variety for people. This may also have an impact on their nutrition. Therefore, relying on local and seasonal at all times might not be suitable. However, we can make small efforts to increase our intake of local and seasonal.

How to start:

  • Start growing your own. If there is lack of space, fruits and vegetables can be grown in planters and windowsills can be used. The best way is to start off with growing herbs and lettuce.
  • Subscribe to a fruit and vegetable box or shop at farmer’s market.
  • Learn on what foods are in season so that you can plan accordingly.


Eating local and seasonal initially may seem restrictive and limiting but very soon you’ll find yourself enjoying different types of fruit and vegetables; and if you start rustling up new recipes it will become exciting too.
